Best eSIM for Japan: compare plans for your trip
For Japan, start with your trip length, data use and hotspot needs. Compare these five sellers on the package you would actually buy, then check its local network and IP location.

Choose for your trip
For a one- or two-week holiday with maps, messages and hotel Wi-Fi, start by comparing fixed-data packages with enough validity for the whole stay. Estimate your usage before choosing 5 GB, 10 GB or an unlimited option. Heavy video use and a laptop can change the choice more than the number of holiday days alone.
For travel beyond the main cities, check the named network against the places you will stay. A provider’s brand name or a 5G badge does not establish coverage on a particular hiking route. If you also visit South Korea or Taiwan, compare a regional plan with separate country plans.
Providers and plans compared
Simvito sells travel eSIMs and is included in this comparison. We checked the official product pages linked below on 2 November 2026. This article compares published terms; we have not tested these providers’ speeds, coverage or support. Confirm the exact package before paying.
| Provider | Published offer checked | What to check for your trip |
|---|---|---|
| Airalo | Fixed-data and unlimited Japan plans | Open the exact package’s coverage and network details. |
| Holafly | Unlimited phone data; hotspot 1 GB per day | Budget for the separate hotspot allowance. |
| Nomad | Fixed-data and unlimited Japan plans | Choose the intended package or regional version. |
| Saily | 10 GB / 30 days: USD 17.99 | Match the quota, validity and checkout currency. |
| Simvito | Japan plans compared by network and IP location | Read each plan’s stated networks, IP location and restrictions. |
Compare the price of the whole trip
One fixed-data reference checked on 2 November 2026 was Saily’s Japan 10 GB / 30-day package at USD 17.99. This illustrates a complete package price. Match the same quota and validity on the other official stores; their cheapest advertised entry plans may cover a different amount of data or fewer days.
Use the same data allowance, validity and checkout currency when comparing prices. Check whether a reduction needs a coupon or applies only to a first purchase. Divide a fixed-data total by its included GB only after confirming the plan lasts for your entire trip; an unlimited plan needs a separate check of its full-speed and hotspot allowances.
Coverage, networks and IP location
A Japan mobile network and a Japanese IP address are separate facts. A travel plan can connect to a Japanese network while its data reaches the internet through another country. Check a stated IP location when a service requires a Japanese IP; an unspecified location is not a promise of one.
The network options in Japan’s current plans and Japan mobile networks help you compare the information each tariff actually provides. If a field is missing, ask before buying rather than treating the missing detail as a feature.
Before you buy
For a laptop or a second traveler, check the separate hotspot allowance. “Unlimited” phone data does not by itself establish unlimited high-speed data or unlimited tethering. Read the selected package’s speed, sharing and activation rules.
- Confirm that your exact phone model supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked; see [device compatibility](page:devices).
- Choose the allowance and validity for every day of the trip; see [estimating travel data](guide:how-much-data-for-travel).
- Follow the plan’s installation and validity-start instructions, then select it for mobile data; see [when to activate](guide:when-to-activate-esim).
Check voice and SMS separately if you need a local number. Keep your home line’s roaming and automatic data switching under control to avoid using that line for travel data.
