Who needs one
Vietnam issues e-visas to citizens of every country and territory. Some passports don't need a visa for short trips: British citizens, for example, can visit visa-free for up to 45 days for tourism or business. Vietnam's visa-free list has changed several times since 2025, so check yours with the Vietnamese embassy where you live.
To stay longer than your visa-free period, get an e-visa before you go. If you get one while already in Vietnam, you have to leave and re-enter for it to start.
The official sites
Vietnam's Ministry of Public Security runs the e-visa system on evisa.gov.vn and thithucdientu.gov.vn. Vietnamese authorities advise using only addresses that end in .gov.vn. Look-alike sites rank high in search results and advertise “express visas”, “same-day approval” or “guaranteed visas”.
Fee, stay and entry points
- A multiple-entry visa valid for up to 90 days costs US$50 under the Ministry of Finance's fee schedule (Circular 62/2023/TT-BTC).
- You can enter and leave only through the border points you selected when applying. Vietnam has 83 international border points that accept e-visas.
- Your passport needs at least six months' validity from arrival, two blank pages and no damage. Enter and leave on the same passport.
Changing planes in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City
Transferring from an international flight to a domestic one means going through immigration at the transfer airport, even if you then fly on abroad. You need a visa or visa exemption for that.
Arrival card at Tan Son Nhat
Since 15 April 2026, foreign visitors arriving at Tan Son Nhat airport in Ho Chi Minh City have been encouraged to fill in a digital arrival card before arrival. The UK Foreign Office says it isn't mandatory yet, but that may change or extend to other airports at short notice.
Data when you land
Keep the e-visa PDF on your phone offline. Install a Vietnam eSIM before you fly; most plans only start counting when they first connect in Vietnam.
