When to install and activate a travel eSIM
Each plan says when its validity starts: most at first connection, a few at installation.

Two start rules
- Starts at first connection: the clock starts when the eSIM first connects to a supported network. You can install it before you leave and keep the line off until you land.
- Starts when installed: the clock starts when you download the eSIM, so install it after you arrive, on Wi-Fi. Plan pages mark these “Starts when installed. Install after you arrive.”
Check the option you choose
Plans for the same destination, and even different lengths of the same plan, can start differently. Check Validity starts for the option you choose before paying, and the order details after.
Once validity has started, turning the line off doesn’t pause it.
Some plans also show Install within: N days of purchase. Install before that runs out.
For whether days run in 24-hour periods or roll over at midnight, see counting trip days.
When you can’t install early
Even with a first-connection plan, the phone can limit where you install. Apple says iPhones bought in mainland China that support eSIM can’t install a non-mainland eSIM while in mainland China. Check the device page and, if needed, install on Wi-Fi after you arrive.
Don’t scan the code on a spare phone to test it. A QR code installs once, so install it on the phone you’ll travel with.
Before buying and on arrival
- Before buying: check your phone works, every destination is covered, and the plan lasts from the day it starts to the end of your trip.
- On arrival: turn on the travel line, select it for data, turn on data roaming for it, then turn off Wi-Fi and open a webpage to test.
