NZeTA and the visitor levy: what New Zealand asks before you fly

Visa-waiver visitors need an NZeTA before travelling to New Zealand, and most also pay the NZD 100 International Visitor Levy. Everyone fills in the free traveller declaration.

    NZeTA

From NZD 17, cheaper in the official NZeTA app than on the Immigration New Zealand website. It's valid for 2 years, for stays of up to 3 months at a time (6 months for UK citizens). Australian citizens don't need one; Australian permanent residents use an NZeTA but don't pay the levy.

    International Visitor Levy

NZD 100, paid together with your NZeTA or visa application, each time you apply. It isn't refunded if the application is declined. Australian and New Zealand passports and some Pacific Island passports are exempt.

    Chinese visitors coming from Australia

Chinese passport holders flying directly from Australia, with an eligible Australian visa that's valid at check-in, can use an NZeTA instead of a New Zealand visa, until further notice. Transiting through Australia doesn't count.

    New Zealand Traveller Declaration

Everyone arriving completes one, children and New Zealanders included. It's free; by air you can submit it from 24 hours before your trip starts. The questions come in several languages, but answers must be in English.

    Data when you land

Install a New Zealand eSIM before you fly, and download offline maps before driving into the backcountry, where no network has signal.
