When should you install and activate a travel eSIM?
Buying, installing and connecting are different events. The rule shown for the exact plan and duration determines when the validity clock begins.

Three possible start rules
- Starts on purchase: validity begins when the plan is bought. Buying far ahead may use up days before the trip.
- Starts on installation: downloading the profile starts the clock. Leave installation until you are ready to use the plan.
- Starts on first network connection: the clock starts when the eSIM first registers on a supported network. Early installation may be possible, but keep the line off until needed.
Check the chosen duration as well as the plan
A similar-looking plan or a different duration can have a different rule. Check the plan details before payment and the delivered order instructions afterwards. If the start rule is missing or conflicting, ask support before installing.
Turning the line off does not pause validity after it has started. First check the start event: purchase, installation or first supported network connection.
Then check how validity days are counted: rolling 24-hour periods or calendar days in the stated network time zone. This determines when the plan expires.
For a daily-data plan, check the allowance reset separately. For example, validity can use rolling 24-hour periods while the daily allowance resets at 00:00 UTC+8. Use this example only if it matches the order; a reset time is not automatically the validity boundary or midnight at your destination.
Installing before departure has exceptions
Even if the plan starts on first connection, the phone may impose regional installation restrictions. Apple says supported iPhones purchased in mainland China cannot install a non-mainland eSIM while located there. Check the device page and arrange Wi-Fi at arrival if needed.
Do not scan the code on a spare phone just to test it. Simvito profiles are issued for one installation, so use the phone you will travel with.
A practical departure checklist
- Before buying: confirm device eligibility, every destination, travel dates and the plan’s start rule.
- Before leaving: keep order access available and save installation instructions. If permitted, install a first-connection plan and leave the line off.
- At the destination: enable the travel line, choose it for data, follow the roaming instructions and test while Wi-Fi is still available.
Choose a plan with the right timing
A longer duration is only useful if it covers the days after its actual start event. Compare timing alongside data and price in the destination catalogue. For several stops, use the trip planner and review each suggested plan’s details.
