Choosing an eSIM for Malaysia

These 103 plans use Celcom, CelcomDigi, Digi, Maxis, and U Mobile. Malaysia now has two 5G networks: U Mobile's own, which all its users moved onto by 30 June 2026, and the shared DNB network the other operators use. In Opensignal's July 2026 Malaysia report (April to June data), U Mobile won the most awards and had the fastest downloads in every region.

41 plans state that traffic exits in Malaysia, so your IP is Malaysian; 46 state an exit in Indonesia or Singapore. For sites or apps limited to Malaysia, pick one marked Malaysia under “IP exit” in the plan details.

Another 16 don't state an exit.

Day-tripping from Singapore to Johor Bahru? The eSIM connects once you're across the Causeway, and Singapore citizens don't need the MDAC. For Sabah and Sarawak advice differs, so pick a plan that lists more than one network. See Malaysia's MDAC arrival card.

Malaysia eSIM networks compared

Malaysia plans here use 4 local networks: U Mobile, Celcom, Digi, and Maxis. Some plans stay on one network; others list several and connect to whichever has signal.

Signal depends on where you are. For a specific place, check the operator’s coverage map.

About eSIMs for Malaysia

Do I need a Malaysian phone number?

Most travellers don't. U Mobile's tourist plan page says to register Grab with a non-Malaysian number, and WhatsApp keeps working on your existing account. Whether a plan includes a local number is in its details.

What is the IP exit?

The country your traffic leaves from. Sites and apps use your IP to decide where you are, so a plan that exits in Malaysia looks like a Malaysian connection.

Which operators will my phone use in Malaysia?

Celcom, CelcomDigi, Digi, Maxis, U Mobile. Which one you connect to depends on local signal.

Where in Malaysia can I use it?

Anywhere the plan’s networks have signal, including Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Kota Kinabalu; rural and mountain areas depend on local coverage.

Is 5G supported?

Yes. Operators here are listed with 5G; each plan's networks show which.

What happens when the data runs out?

It depends on the plan: some keep a usable speed of 1 Mbps; others drop to 128 Kbps / 384 Kbps / 512 Kbps, which is enough for messaging; others stop data.

When does the validity start?

It starts when the eSIM first connects to a network. You can install it before you go.

Can I use a hotspot to share data in Malaysia?

11 of these plans state personal hotspot support, so you can share data with a laptop or travel companions. It comes out of this eSIM’s allowance. Look for “Personal hotspot” in the plan details.

Can I install the same eSIM on a second phone?

No. Each QR code installs once. If you delete the eSIM or reset the phone, it can't be installed again, and once it has connected to a network it can't be refunded.

Can I top up data or extend validity?

Some plans add data, some add days, and some can't be topped up; each plan says which. Top up from the eSIM in My eSIMs. There's nothing new to install.

Are these prices tax inclusive?

Yes. The listed price is the final price.
